Core Concepts
The Immanent Metaphysics is built on a rigorous foundation. Here are the key concepts that form its structure:
The Three Modalities
Three fundamental ways of engaging with existence:
- Immanent — What is present, immediate, experiential. The world as encountered. Grounded in sensation, perception, the here-and-now.
- Omniscient — What is known, relational, structural. The world as understood. How things connect, patterns, systems, meaning.
- Transcendent — What is beyond, potential, boundary. The world as possible. Limits, choices, what could be otherwise.
These aren't abstract categories — they're fundamental modes that appear everywhere: in perception, in thought, in relationship, in creativity, in spiritual practice.
The Three Axioms
Three statements so fundamental they ground everything else:
- Axiom I — The immanent is more fundamental than the omniscient and/or the transcendent. The omniscient and transcendent are conjugate.
- Axiom II — A class of the transcendent precedes an instance of the immanent. A class of the immanent precedes an instance of the omniscient. A class of the omniscient precedes an instance of the transcendent.
- Axiom III — The immanent, omniscient, and transcendent are distinct, inseparable, and non-interchangeable.
These aren't arbitrary assumptions. Forrest derives them through careful philosophical work, showing why they must be true for any coherent understanding of reality.
The Incommensuration Theorem (ICT)
A rigorous proof that determinism is false and genuine choice is real.
The ICT demonstrates that certain relationships cannot be fully captured in any single measurement or description. If correct:
- Your choices aren't predetermined
- You actually have agency
- The future isn't fixed
This grounds the possibility of effective choice — choosing well isn't an illusion.
